Heart Toilet Paper Roll Garland – A Cute DIY Craft to Make With Kids
Honestly? This heart toilet paper roll garland surprised me in the best way.
It’s made from toilet paper rolls (I know, not the most glamorous start), but it turned into something so cute and cheerful, I had to share it. It’s one of those crafts that kids absolutely love, but even as a grown-up, I found it super calming to do. A bit of cutting, a bit of painting, and suddenly you’ve got something super cute and cozy!

Whether you’re decorating for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or just want something soft and happy on the wall—this heart garland is totally worth making.
It doesn’t need fancy supplies, and you can 100% customize the colors to fit your mood or your space.
And the best part? It’s made from stuff you probably already have at home.
What You’ll Need:
- Empty toilet paper rolls (you can cut two hearts from each roll, so start saving a few!)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paint (we used pastels, but red-pink, rainbow, or metallics are also gorgeous!)
- Paintbrushes
- Jute string or twine
- Regular tape
- Optional: battery-powered string lights
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Cut your toilet paper rolls in half.
Each roll will give you two hearts. So the more rolls you have, the longer your garland will be. I started saving them way too late (oops), but a few go a long way!
2. Draw a heart shape on the roll.
Place the roll half flat, and draw a heart lengthwise—so the point of the heart ends at the bottom of the roll, and the top curves stretch across the open side.
3. Carefully cut out your heart.
Cut along the pencil line, but leave those little side sections intact so the heart keeps its shape like a soft “heart frame.”
Make sure to leave the sides of the roll connected—so draw the heart all the way to the edges. That way, it stays one solid piece.
4. Time to paint!
Choose your color palette and go for it. I went with pastels because… well, I’m in a soft color era. But this craft is super cute in classic Valentine reds, rainbow colors, or even glittery tones. Let them dry completely before the next step.
5. Get your twine ready.
I used jute string for that natural look, but any sturdy string will do. Start by leaving a longer piece (about 20 cm / 8 inches) before you attach the first heart. This makes it easier to hang later.
6. Attach the hearts to the string.
Place the heart upside down so the top of the heart touches the string. Then tape the string inside the fold, so it’s hidden and the heart hangs straight.
I used simple tape and it held just fine. No glue mess, yay!
Space each heart about 7 cm (or 3 inches) apart for a nice even look.
7. (Optional but so cozy): Add fairy lights.
If you want to go next-level cute? Thread a tiny string of battery-powered fairy lights through the hearts. The glow makes it feel extra magical.
8. Hang it up and enjoy the moment.
Over a window, on a bookshelf, along a mantle—this garland looks adorable pretty much anywhere. And if your toddler helped? Prepare for compliments.
