Recycled Crab Craft That Actually Turns Out Adorable

Okay but seriously… how fun are these little crabs?!

They’re bright, cheerful, wiggly in the best way, and surprisingly relaxing to make. Lily giggled the entire time they “walked” across the table.

This (partly) recycled crab craft is a mix of crafty, silly, and stylish (yes, stylish – look at those lashes), and the best part? You can totally make them with stuff you probably already have at home.

Let’s make some crustacean cuteness.

What You’ll Need:

  • Toilet paper rolls (you know you’ve got ‘em)
  • Crêpe paper (or regular colored paper, or even paint)
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Glue (hot glue works best for fast drying)
  • Googly eyes
  • Iron wire or satay skewers
  • Small circles of paper (for behind the eyes)
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step: How to Make Toilet Paper Roll Crabs

1. Wrap the Body

Start by wrapping your toilet roll in crêpe paper.

I love using crêpe paper for this because the texture makes the crab feel a bit more… well, crabby. In a cute way.
But paint or regular colored paper works too!

Just glue it down and wrap it snugly.

2. Add the Eye Stalks

Before you attach the arms, it’s a good idea to do the eyes first (just easier this way).

Take a pair of scissors and carefully snip two tiny holes at the top of the crab’s body.

Insert a bit of iron wire or a satay skewer into each one. These are the crab’s eye stalks!

3. Create the Legs

Take one pipe cleaner and cut it in half.

Now bend about 2 cm on each end of each piece – these will be the crab’s feet.
Glue the long part under the crab’s body, and glue the little bent parts to the sides so it stands on its “legs.”

Tip: if it wobbles, just adjust the angle of the pipe cleaner feet – they’re pretty forgiving!

4. Craft the Claws

Flatten another toilet roll and draw out claw shapes (max 6) (think like a little “C” or crescent shape with a rounded base).

You’ll want 2 for each claw so you can sandwich them around the pipe cleaner.

Cut them out and wrap them in crêpe paper too.

5. Make the Arms

Cut another pipe cleaner in half.
These will be your crab’s arms – the part that holds the claws.

You can bend them into fun little wave shapes or leave them straight – totally up to you.

Now, cut a small slit in the bottom of each claw (the part that stays closed) so you can fit your pipe cleaner in.

Add a dab of glue, press the two claw pieces together with the pipe cleaner inside, and voilà: a perfectly pinchable claw.

Glue each arm to the side of the crab’s body, or a bit toward the back if you want them to curve forward.

6. Add the Googly Eyes

Time to bring your crab to life!

Take two small paper circles and two googly eyes.
Glue each eye onto a paper circle first.

Then place your wire or skewer in between the googly eye and a second paper circle – like a little sandwich.

That’s it!

I mean… look at them.

They’re goofy, colorful, and just weird enough to be irresistible.
Totally toddler-approved, but also very satisfying for grown-up hands.

Fun Variations to Try:

  • Holiday Crabs: Red and green for Christmas? Yes. A glittery gold New Year’s crab? Totally. Pastel spring crabs? You bet.
  • Add Lights: Wrap tiny fairy lights around their arms for a magical touch.
  • Themed Eyes: Try sleepy eyes, big lashes, or make a whole family with different expressions.

Okay, friend… time to gather your toilet rolls and make some crabby magic.

They’re SO fun to create, and honestly, a little addictive. I kept saying “just one more,” and somehow ended up with a whole crab parade.

If you make one (or a dozen), I’d love to see them – tag me on Pinterest or Instagram so I can share your creations!

Happy crafting!
