Easy Rainbow Slime – Made with Clear Glue!

We made our own rainbow slime the other day – and honestly, it took me right back to my own school days.
Remember how everyone was obsessed with slime back then?
We’d stretch it, poke it, stash it in pencil cases… honestly, what didn’t we do with it?

And now? I’m making it at the kitchen table with my toddler.
Full circle moment. And kind of adorable.

If you’ve ever wanted to try making slime at home but felt a little intimidated: this one’s for you.
It’s super simple, the ingredients are easy to find, and your kids will LOVE helping out.

We used clear glue to get that glossy, see-through finish – and I love love how it makes the colors pop.
We only made four colors, and that was already more than enough for a rainbow moment.

Let me show you how we did it!

What You’ll Need

For each color, we used:

  • 100 ml clear glue (about 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • A few drops of food coloring
  • Glitter (optional – but highly encouraged ✨)
  • 2 teaspoons saline solution

Tip: Your saline solution must contain both boric acid and sodium borate.
That’s what activates the slime.
We used this contact lens solution – worked like a charm!

How to Make Rainbow Slime (4 Easy Colors!)

We made one batch per color – super quick, super satisfying.

1. Pour 100 ml of clear glue into a small bowl

Clear glue gives that shiny, see-through look – perfect for colorful slime!

2. Add ½ teaspoon baking soda and some food Coloring

Baking soda helps the slime thicken and gives it that classic stretch.

For the food coloring We used red, yellow, blue, and green – but you can go with whatever colors make you happy.

3. Stir in 2 tablespoons warm water

This makes everything blend more easily and helps it activate evenly.

5. Add 2 teaspoons of saline solution

6. Knead the slime (yes, really!)

Here’s the trick: you have to knead it for at least 5 minutes.
At first, it might feel too sticky or soft – but keep going.
After a few minutes, it transforms into stretchy, perfect slime.

7. Repeat for each color

Make as many colors as you like.
Once they’re done, you can swirl them gently together for a rainbow effect, or just enjoy them one by one.

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Store your slime in an airtight container or ziplock bag to keep it fresh.
  • Too sticky? Add just a tiny bit more saline solution.
  • Too stiff? Add a few drops of warm water and knead it again.

Why It Works

It all comes down to the boric acid and sodium borate in the saline solution.
Those ingredients react with the glue (PVA) and create that stretchy, bouncy slime texture we all know and love.

So again: double check your saline label before you start!

FAQ – Slime Questions You Might Be Googling

Can I use white glue instead of clear glue?
Yes – It gives your slime not that glassy look but also very pretty!

Why won’t my slime come together?
It’s usually the saline. Check that your solution has boric acid and sodium borate. If not, it won’t activate.

My slime is sticky – what do I do?
Add a little more saline solution and knead again. Start small – too much can make it rubbery.

What if my slime is too firm or stiff?
Add a few drops of warm water and knead it until it softens up.

How long does homemade slime last?
About 1 to 2 weeks if you store it airtight. After that, it starts to dry out.

Is this safe for young kids?
Yes – with supervision. It’s not edible, so make sure they’re not tasting it. And wash hands after playing.

Honestly? Totally Worth It.

This was such a fun little project.
My daughter was so proud that we “made sparkly slime ourselves.”
And I loved seeing her stretch and swirl it for a full half hour (yay for focused play!).

If you’ve been on the fence about trying slime – go for it.
It’s way easier than it looks. And bonus: you probably have most of the ingredients already at home.
