Paint Chip Toddler Book: Fun, Educational, and Easy to Make

I was looking for a fun and simple DIY activity to help my little one learn colors.

I came across an idea using paint chips from the hardware store, and I thought, “Why not make a little book with them?”

This way, my daughter can flip through it, and it’ll be like her very own color storybook!

What You’ll Need

• Paint chips in various colors (I picked blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, and green). Grab two of each color.
• Color-matching stickers (from the dollar store or wherever you can find fun shapes and colors).
• Hole puncher (or scissors if you don’t have one).
• Keyring (to hold the book together).
• Optional: Craft supplies to decorate the cover with your child’s name or a cute accessory.

Get Paint Chips

Head to the hardware store and pick up some paint chips in a variety of bright colors.

Make sure to grab two of each color so you have enough pages for your book.

Make Double-Sided Pages

If you grabbed two of each color, glue them together to make double-sided pages. You can also choose to use even more colors and glue them back-to-back.

This not only adds more variety but also makes the pages thicker, turning your DIY book into a mini board book.

The sturdier pages are perfect for little hands that love to grab and explore!

Punch Holes

Using a hole puncher, make a hole in the top corner of the paint chips.

If you don’t have a hole punch, scissors will work too.

Just be careful to make the holes even so they fit neatly on the keyring.

Assemble the Book

Thread all the paint chips onto the keyring, making sure they’re in rainbow order to make it more organized and visually appealing for your little one.

Add Stickers

Here’s the fun part! I added matching stickers to each color page.

For example, I stuck yellow stars and giraffes on the yellow paint chip, and pink hearts on the pink paint chip.

These stickers help make the book more fun for my daughter to flip through and “read.”

Get Creative with the Cover

If you want to add a personal touch, you can decorate the front of the book with your child’s name or any fun design you like.

I used thick paper for the cover and had a set of colored tape at home, so I decided to decorate it by sticking the tape down, color by color.

It turned out really cute and colorful! You can also add a little charm or accessory to the keyring to make the book extra special and fun for your little one to carry around.

Tips for Teaching Colors to Your Toddler

• Make it a Game: Point to a color page and ask your toddler to find something in the room that matches the color. For example, “Can you find something yellow?” This simple activity helps reinforce color recognition and gets them moving around.
